Fort Lauderdale, known as "Venice of the United States", has 160 miles of palm-fringed man-made waterways set just inland from the Atlantic waterfront. Back in 1837 it was a garrison town and trading post; today, it is one of America's great boating playgrounds set among flamingos and butterfly sanctuaries with the Bahamas just a return day trip away. The Pillars at New River Sound offers the best of both worlds; it faces the inter coastal waterways busied by thousands of colourful pleasure craft. Turn around, and you are just 500 feet from the palm-lined promenade and beach facing the rolling surf of the Atlantic. The Pillars has the look of a plantation house: green shutters, white pillared verandas and flowering trellises. The interiors are a pot- pourris of classic and cane, gorgeous fabrics, eclectic bric-a-brac, heaps of comfort and, to cap it all, a grand piano in the lobby. A luxury beach home with a huge helping of charm.
