Ahmed Ezz

Everlastingly Charming

“ I am an ordinary person, who comes from an average family, and my parents did their best to raise all their children. I worked in the tourism field for a while. I have always wanted to work as an actor, and that’s why I participated in many plays during my school and university years... ”

Perhaps the fact that Ahmed Ezz was born on the same date as the Egyptian revolution ‘July 23’, explains the rationale for his determination. This stunning ‘Leo’ is one of those rare wellgrounded young actors, who isn’t only a great talent, but also a young man with morality. The middle child in his family, and a graduate of the faculty of Arts ‘English Department’, Ezz experienced several journeys prior to devoting himself to his life long dream of becoming an actor. Ahmed Ezz has commendably established himself, and proven over the years that he has a lot of aptitude to back his attractive looks and without a doubt there is still more to come….

I read somewhere that you’ve loved acting since childhood, wanting to convey messages through film to the audience. Is there any particular role you seek? I mean, excluding action thrillers.
The action thrillers are not my main goal; however the audience is drawn to these kinds of movies. In the beginning of any actor's career he is bound to accept the proposed movies, providing they are suitable and don't contradict his views. The first couple of movies that I participated in were social films such as "Hob El Banat", “Mozakrat Morahka" and "Sana Oula Nasb", when I started to become recognized, I was offered the opportunity to choose the suspense genres. I would love to play some historical roles, such as historical social or political phase. However these kinds of movies require massive productions.

In my opinion you have come a long way since your first cinema appearance in “Mozakrat Morahka” back in 2001, when compared to the widely credited “Malaky Iskendria”. What have you learned about yourself after playing numerous diverse characters?
At the beginning everything is new to you, may be you are shy and not familiar with all the cinematic tools and expressions. Nevertheless, as you work more with different directors you gain more experience, improve your style, take hold of all your tools and most of all your confidence level increases. Now when I watch my previous roles; I believe I would definitely like to have performed them in a different way, due to the experience I acquired during my career.

Could you discuss the criteria you use in selecting your roles and how that process has evolved over the course of your career?
First of all, it must be a new character, secondly; it should be something that the audience will be attracted to. Thirdly, the movie should not have anything, either socially or morally unacceptable. I would hate to offend the audience in any way. And finally, the character should have a lot of dramatic feelings and interactions that I can convey artistically and professionally.

Are you going to increase this criterion in the future?
I have already increased the criteria, now I look for ideas that will benefit my society as well as issues that have not been tackled before (whether a social cause, national cause etc). For example the last Ramadan series was addressing illegal immigration. I think that these opportunities do not come too many times in an actor's career.

What were the core ideas in the Ramadan series ‘Al Adham’ script that you wanted to get your teeth into as an actor?
The core idea was to address the illegal immigration of our youth to foreign countries.
You're known as an actor who intensely prepares for each role. What did you do to prepare to play ‘this’ character?
Adham was leading a difficult and harsh life, so he was supposed to be frail, non-athletic, tense and exhausted. I had to lose some weight for the character. However, the external appearance is very simple to create; the difficult part is to portray this in the interactions and feelings. In order to convey and depict the emotions written on paper I had to believe that I am Adham, the credit to this goes to the script writer who wrote the screenplay flawlessly.

Your characters constantly appear to be overwhelmed by an internal as well as an external dilemma. What draws you to these intricate genres?
I’m captivated by intricate characters. Especially in order to prove a point, which is; I am a good actor and not only a handsome actor. As years go by we grow older, our looks change, and this is simply the natural course of life. I hope that I have a long successful acting career, where I perform numerous different roles and characters because I AM A GOOD ACTOR.

You have obviously been a victim of tabloid journalism at some point, what has been your reaction? Do you allow the gossip to have an effect on you?
I would not say at some point, I would say continually. No doubt there are many respectable publications. But unfortunately in contrast, some publications depend entirely on gossip in order to sell. In the beginning I used to get annoyed - now I listen and pay no attention to all the gossip.

This issue is about feminism and among our articles we have ‘Compassionate vs. Challenging women’, which of these two qualities in a woman, does Ahmed Ezz look for?
The most important thing is that the woman be successful in her career, since I admire effective working women, who fully support the man in his work. I like women who are both challenging and compassionate, but I favor compassion.

You are an opinion leader in many areas, but I haven't heard your perspective regarding any existing issues. What has grabbed your attention lately?
Extremism, lately we have been awfully fanatical about almost everything, sports, religion, art, etc… Nowadays it seems we either love or hate. People are stressed about everything in life, including me of course. We should be calmer, open-minded and more tolerant, because life is difficult on its own.

If you don’t mind me asking; what significant goals are you in search of in your personal life?
I hope to succeed in my career, get married and have kids. Every actor has his ups and downs; no one can be 100 percent successful. I hope my fans would support in all Circumstances.

What would you like to say about your last movie?
Badal Fa2ed is one of the greatest films I have worked in. I liked the character very much as it was new to me, since all of my former roles were playing a righteous person. I have never portrayed the character of an addict.
