Recently we’ve been witnessing a rumor spree. Rumors have been always there, however during the last year, they’ve had a negative effect on society and on the economic arena. Rumors spread very quickly in societies which are very vulnerable, and it is no secret that Egypt has been susceptible since the revolution. No doubt that the stock exchange has been affected greatly with these negative rumors. Investors are afraid to invest in Egypt because of the rumors. As well as tourists who may get false information concerning Egypt.

These rumors spread like crazy especially with the BBM service and face-book. People broad cast any news they get, they don’t check or verify the source of these rumors, which accordingly spreads panic amongst people. We have witnessed rumors such as “Banks ATM machines will not have cash during certain days, from 25th of January until the 27th”, “there will be no gas or oil in the petrol stations,” “Go get groceries, there will be a major lack of necessities” and many, many more.

I know that there have been numerous incidents of thefts and kidnapping that have happened, which were certainly terrible, and they were the seeds for many rumors that we hear over time. We all have to refrain from broad casting rumors or sharing anything without making sure that the news we are sharing is in fact true.

Egyptians have been in fear from all the rumors that we constantly hear. This is exactly why we should all work towards spreading security and helping the police force and the government in this particular issue for a more secure Egypt, as it always has been…
